Shan Peng

Biography:

Shan Peng is a visual artist who works predominantly in the medium of oil paint. She forayed widely in different domains of art, such as painting, photography and installation, and now she feels grounded in the intersection of traditional techniques filtered through a contemporary lens.

Having completed a master’s degree in contemporary art theory and criticism at Sotheby’s Institute in London, her interest in art began from an intellectual perspective. A published writer in journals such as Art Monthly, she delves deep into the art of meaning making. No artist is a stranger to the question “why?” Why make art? Why does art have such power over us? Why is art one of the most persistent evidence of not only human history but the human spirit?

It is these questions that led her from the more theoretical practices in contemporary art back to painting. Figurative painting to be specific, a practice as old as time. Reality vs illusion, realism vs abstraction. The answers are as elusive as ever, and perhaps rightly so. For it is in our dialogue and engagement with art that beauty is created. The search continues.
